Developing a Coherent Search Algorithm to Identify Phase Modulated Continuous Gravitational Wave Sources

Abstract:
The aim of this project is to further develop a coherent sideband search algorithm for identifying continuous phase modulated gravitational waves from the Fast Fourier Transform of the time-series detector data. The phase modulation occurs due to a Doppler shift when neutron stars, which produce the relevant GWs, are in binary systems. The studied algorithm searches over the frequency of the neutron star’s rotation, it’s period about it’s binary companion, the phase between these, and the phase modulation index, which is dependent on the star’s period and the separation between it and it’s companion.
