LIGO Document G1601982-v1
- Light scattering from the highly reflective coatings of gravitational wave detectors test masses are responsible for a large fraction of the stored-beam light losses, and ultimately affect the sensitivity and range of the detectors.
Spatial and amplitude distribution studies of these scatterers on LIGO mirrors are reviewed, based on measurements made in situ and on witness-samples, in an effort to identify common features of the scattering points, understanding the physics behind their formation, and finding strategies to reduce their effect.
