Abstract:
Potential gravitational wave strains might be lost in the signal data as they have a low SNR value. This summer (Summer 2016), I will be working with Dr. Rory Smith and Dr. Jonah Kanner to implement a new detection statistic that may be able to rank candidate events in a more robust manner than SNR. This detection statistic might be able to better discern between strains due to noise and strains due to gravitational waves. The detection statistic will involve calculating the Bayes facor, and this study will be focused on binary black hole systems.
