LIGO Document P1100120-v7
- For the LIGO and Virgo interferometric gravitational wave detectors, data quality studies are essential for detecting signals from astrophysical sources. Interferometer data contains a high rate of noise transients, severely limiting the statistical significance of potential gravitational wave signals of short duration and/or poorly modeled form. We follow the progression of data quality studies aimed to maximize the potential to claim detections during the enhanced detector era, including an exploration of the impact of detector artifacts on the gravitational wave searches and the effectiveness of different techniques for removing them.
