- The recent detections of gravitational waves (GW) from coalescing black hole binaries have opened a wealth of possibilities for testing GR against alternative theories of gravity. A class of alternative theories can be characterized by the modification of the propagation of GWs. By introducing either a “massive graviton” term or a Lorentz invariance violating term in the GW dispersion relation, we have placed observational bounds on GW dispersion and the graviton mass, in the light of the signals detected so far. I will present the method employed and will give an update of current results. I will finally discuss the intriguing potential of cosmological applications that can make use of this kind of information.
