Abstract:
This is for a public talk for high school students and high school physics teachers at the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab on June 23, 2016.

The talk has 2 parts.

* The first part introduces my background: my education, how I got to my position, what I do now, and the basic concepts upon which my research depends.

* The second part discusses how gravitational waves work, the recent detections made by Advanced LIGO, and how Advanced LIGO achieves the required noise performance.

The powerpoint version has video and audio not available in the pdf.
