- Crackle occurs when a system responds to slowly changing external conditions through discrete, impulsive events spanning a broad range of sizes. Crackle needs to be studied because it could be a noise source for LIGO. As my SURF project this summer, I worked to measure an upper limit for this noise in maraging steel blade springs.
