EM Followup of GW Transients: Background, first attempt, and prospects

Abstract:

I will introduce the wealth of information that we can learn from transient GW signals and the observational capabilities of the current and planned ground-based interferometric detectors. Last year, in their joint science runs S6/VSR2&3, LIGO and Virgo partnered with telescopes and made a first attempt at the EM followup of GW transients. I will describe this effort and outline the work being done to prepare for the advanced detector era, which will begin in 2015–16.
