Advanced LIGO demands very high power levels circulating in the long arms. Close to a megawatt of laser light has to be stored in the arm cavities in order to reach the sensitivity goal. An alternative approach is to take advantage of non-classical light states which can be injected into the anti-symmetric port. We propose to inject squeezed light into the Hanford 4 km interferometer to improve its sensitivity by 3 dB in the frequency band dominated by shot noise. A project is underway to build a squeezed light source by the end of the next science run and to perform an experiment with a long baseline interferometer, and bring squeezing to gravitational wave detectors.
